Friday, October 18, 1996 -- U.S. Secretary of Transportation Federico Peña today announced the
release of the third edition of the Directory of Transportation Data Sources from
the U.S. Department of Transportation.
This report continues to be the most comprehensive source of transportation
statistics from a wide variety of government and private sources, all brought together in
one convenient location, Peña said.
The purpose of the Directory is to provide users of transportation statistics
with a comprehensive inventory of transportation data sources to effect easier
accessibility and availability of information. A data source is defined as a computerized data base
developed within the U.S. government, state government, U.S. private industry, Canada or
Mexico, for internal or external use, as well as regularly scheduled or special published
statistical reports not included on a computerized system.
BTS Director Dr. T. R. Lakshmanan said, Accessibility to this information is
vital to the transportation community whose hunger for data is ever-increasing. Over the
years, the directory has become an indispensable tool for users of transportation statistics.
The directory will be available on CD-ROM in BTS s annual Data Sampler
CD-ROM to be released in January 1997.
To order the Directory of Transportation Data Sources, or for
