Thursday, July 13, 2000 -- U.S. Transportation Secretary Rodney E. Slater today announced the award of $392,382 in transportation statistics research grants to individuals at five universities for projects supporting the U.S. Department of Transportation’s goal of advancing the field of transportation statistics.

"These grants will help improve the quality of information available for decision makers in both the public and private sectors," Secretary Slater said. "Better information will lead to better decisions directly affecting transportation safety, President Clinton and Vice President Gore’s highest transportation priority, and the efficiency of America’s transportation systems."

The annual grant program was authorized by the Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century (TEA-21) to provide funding for projects at institutions of higher education that support the development of the field of transportation statistics or involve research or development in transportation statistics. The program is administered by the Department’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS).

"The awarding of these grants is another step forward in the Department of Transportation’s strategy of improving the quality of transportation information that will be available to public and private decision makers," BTS Director Dr. Ashish Sen said. "The projects we are funding will improve our ability to collect and analyze information and I look forward to funding additional valuable projects in future years."
