Railway Network (1:2,000,000 base scale) (Line) - Data Dictionary

Abstract: The Rail Network is a comprehensive data set of the nation's railway system at the 1:2,000,000 scale. The data set covers the 48 contiguous States plus the District of Columbia.

Purpose: The database provides location and attribute information for use in national and regional network analysis applications.

Supplemental Information: At the time of publishing the CD significant updates to the layer were underway. Please check http://gis.fra.dot.gov for the latest version of the dataset.

The National Rail Network 1:2,000,000 (line) contains 1 polyline features (FRAID 8298) that is defined by more than 500 shape points. This feature will not import correctly into the workstation version of ArcInfo, which has a 500 shapepoint limit. When importing into the workstation version of ArcInfo, this feature will be automatically split into 2 features. As part of this process, attributes are simply duplicated on the split features. Because of this, attributes such as LENGTH become invalid for these features.

Field Number Attribute Description Data Type
0 FID Internal feature number. Long Integer representing an object identifier
1 Shape Feature geometry. Geometry
2 ID The link ID in the network structure Double Precision Floating Point
3 LENGTH The length of the Rail segment Double Precision Floating Point
4 FRAID The link ID in the network structure. Double Precision Floating Point
5 RROWNER1 The reporting mark of the 1st owning railroad. A mark of 'XXXX' indicates an abandoned link. Rule 260 codes are used where available. A mark of 'DUMX' indicates an added connecting link. Character String
6 RROWNER2 The reporting mark of the 2nd owning railroad, if any. Character String
7 RROWNER3 The reporting mark of the 3rd owning railroad, if any. Character String
8 TR1 Reporting mark of the 1st railroad having trackage-rights. Character String
9 TR2 Reporting marks of any additional railroads having trackage rights. Character String
