calendar year 2001 resulted in a real return on assets over
the last year of –7 percent, the lowest value in the 10 years
tracked by this report. Between fourth quarter 2000 and
fourth quarter 2001, operating revenues fell by 33 percent
while operating expenses fell by 14 percent. (These
statistics and the historical data used for comparison
exclude American Airlines, Federal Express, Southwest,
