NOTE: The 2001 National Household Travel Survey
defined a trip as each time a person went from one address to another. "Commute" trips were defined as
those trips made for the purpose of going to or returning from work. However, given the definition of a trip,
those reported as commuting trips were not necessarily anchored by the home
or workplace (for the commutes).
Therefore, care should be taken in analyzing work trips, recognizing
that the distance for these trips is often, but not always, the distance from
home to work. Data are from the daily travel segment of the 2001 National Household Travel Survey. Long-distance travel data (i.e., trips of
50 miles or more collected during a 4-week travel period) are not included
here.
