NOTES: Data are based
on survey results.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics uses the term consumer
unit rather than household. There are an average of 2.5 persons in each
consumer unit. A consumer unit is defined as members of a household related
by blood, marrige, adoption, or other legal arrangement; a single person
living alone or sharing a household with another but who is financially
independent; or two or more persons living together who share
responsibility for at least two-thirds of major types of
expenses—food, housing, and other expenses.
Other transportation includes both local transit
(e.g., bus and taxi travel) and long-distance travel (e.g., airplane
trips).
All dollar amounts are expressed in chained 1996
dollars, unless otherwise specified. Current dollar amounts (which are
available in appendix B of this report) were adjusted to eliminate the
effects of inflation over time.
