Roadmap for the Long-Distance TTDP

Friday, October 31, 2025

The Long-Distance Travel and Tourism Data Program roadmap was created as a component to the proposed Long- Distance Travel and Tourism Data Program (TTDP or The Program). The creation of components like this are in alignment with the National Travel & Tourism Infrastructure Strategic Plan (NTTISP) [USDOT 2024], the U.S. Department of Transportation’s (USDOT’s) Office of International Transportation and Trade (OST-X20) and the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS). Through the Program, the travel and tourism products generated can be used as follows:

  • To better understand where and how domestic tourists and international visitors contribute to the U.S. economy
  • To develop data-driven insights that can inform decision-making, at all levels of government, for improving transportation planning and prioritizing infrastructure improvements
  • To increase collaboration and efficiencies among travel and tourism stakeholders through shared data, use of common metrics, and joint research
  • The Program design considers three main inputs:
  1. The foundation of the program is designed to meet the requirements set forth in Appendix E of the NTTISP [USDOT 2024].
  2. This foundation is supplemented with input from travel and tourism stakeholders. Outreach to this community shows their priorities align closely with the NTTISP.
  3. The same community outreach, combined with state of the practice research, has identified significant data gaps that could be lessened through the planned Program activities.

Infographic that explains The Problem the TTDP solves, The Solution for the problem and the Value the TTDP provides. The problem is that current travel and tourism data is outdated, lacks scalability, exist in a silo, cannot be easily connected to other relevent data and is geographically confine. The solution is to create a program with 3 core components. The value is the program combines the strengths of user reported survey data and existing data sources.
