August 2020 North American Transborder Freight Up 3% from July 2020

Transborder freight between the U.S. and other North American countries (Canada and Mexico) in August 2020:

Total Transborder freight: $93.4 billion of transborder freight moved by all modes of transportation, up 2.7% compared to July 2020 and up 13.9% from June 2020. Transborder freight value in August was down 11.1% compared to August 2019. Most-used mode: Trucks moved $60.9 billion of freight, up 0.2% compared to July 2020, down 7.9% compared to August 2019. Second most-used mode: Railways moved $13.8 billion of freight, up 7.2% compared to July 2020, down 14.3% compared to August 2019.

U.S. Airlines Carried 6% More Cargo in August 2020 than August 2019

U.S. airlines carried 6% more cargo by weight in August 2020 (preliminary) than in August 2019. The rise was fueled by a gain of 8% in domestic cargo with a 1% rise in international cargo, according to data filed with the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) by 13 of the leading cargo airlines.

 

The 13 airlines carry 95% of the total cargo by weight on U.S. airlines. Cargo data consists of freight and mail carried within the U.S. and between the U.S. and foreign points.

August 2020 Freight Transportation Services Index (TSI) Down 1.3% from July

The Freight Transportation Services Index (TSI), which is based on the amount of freight carried by the for-hire transportation industry, fell 1.3% in August from revised July, declining after two months of increases, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics’ (BTS). From August 2019 to August 2020, the index fell 7.4% compared to a rise of 3.9% from August 2018 to August 2019 and a rise of 5.7% from August 2017 to August 2018 (Tables 1, 2, and 2A).
