Rail Freight Revenue Ton-Miles

Freight carried by rail accounts for a very large share of transportation activity in the U.S. In the 2012 Commodity Flow Survey, rail acounted for 47% of national ton-miles. Coal accounted for just under half of this activity, and agricultural commodities and chemical-related commodities also contributed large shares.
