Ensuring security of all transportation modes, facilities, and the people who use them is a national priority. While much of the national focus since September 2001 has been on aircraft and airports, attention is also being directed at other modes; including rail, water, highways, and pipelines. The U.S. transportation sector remains almost entirely dependent on petroleum as an energy source and more than 55 percent of the petroleum used in the United States is now imported.
