Notes: Air carrier data were smoothed using an exponential smoothing model, with a weight of 0.945 to reduce the year-to-year fluctuations. Air carrier fatalities resulting from the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks include only those persons onboard aircraft. All 2006 data are revised. 1999 and 2003 data for general aviation fatalities and rates, 1997 data for passenger car occupants fatality, and 1985 data for VMT are revised.
