Transportation safety is the top priority of the U.S. Department of Transportation. Although the cumulative effect of highway safety innovations coincides with a dramatic drop in highway fatalities, as seen in the timeline, a recent uptick in highway deaths and the highway death rate is a troubling development. The exact causes of these increases and what steps are needed to counter them are unclear.
