Box 2-4 State GDP

Friday, January 6, 2017

Figure 2-4 shows the ratio of state gross domestic product (GDP) from transportation and warehousing divided by the state’s total GDP.  The proportion of gross domestic product produced by the transportation and warehousing sectors varies by state.

State GDP is the state equivalent of national GDP.  Because detailed economic data by state is sparser than for the nation as a whole, the Bureau of Economic Analysis uses slightly different methods to calculate state GDP and state GDP by industry.  BEA estimates labor income and non-corporate capital income using state personal income data.  Business taxes are estimated using Census Bureau data. Total GDP by state for goods producing industries is estimated based on value-added data from the Census Bureau and the Department of Agriculture. Corporate capital income for service producing industries is estimated using financial data for regulated industries and Census Bureau gross receipts and payroll data for non-regulated industries.
