Shares of Imported and Exported TEUs by a Sample of E and W Coast Ports

Key: TEU = twenty-foot equivalent unit

Figure

This line graph compares the share of imported twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) between east coast and west coast imports. There were more imported TEUs to west coast ports than to east coast ports. West coast ports peaked in 2021 at over 12 million TEUs. East coast ports peaked in 2022 at around 11 million TEUs. This line graph compares the share of exported twenty-foot equivalent unites (TEUs) between east coast and west coast imports. Exports from west coast ports decreased over the years from 5 million in 2019 to under 4 million in 2024. East coast exports peaked in 2021 at around 4.5 million, the same year east cost ports surpassed west coast ports in the number of exported TEUs.
