U.S. Highway bridges over water refers to bridges with a navigation vertical clearance greater than zero.
Explanations for the terms Good, Fair, Poor, and Bridge Deck Area can be found at https://www.fhwa.dot.gov/bridge/britab.cfm.
Condition and bridge counts are of December 31st of the given year. Starting with 2021, data are as of June 15.
U.S. totals include the 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico for 2012-2017. For 2018, U.S. totals include the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Guam and Puerto Rico. For 2019 and later, U.S. totals include the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico, and U.S. Virgin Islands.
Table includes: Rural–Interstate, principal arterial, minor arterial, major collector, minor collector and local roads; Urban–Interstate, other freeways or expressways, other principal arterial, minor arterial, collector, and local roads.
Subcategories may not add to total due to source not coding some bridges as Urban or Rural.
Prior to 2019, bridges were based on appraisal ratings. Therefore, the table's 2014 to 2018 bridge conditions were added variables using the deck, substructure, superstructure, and culvert conditions to calculate the lowest rating per bridge, which determines the bridge condition. Thus, between 2014 and 2017 the 34 bridges that had no record of a deck, substructure, superstructure, and culvert condition rating were not included.
