This map shows the National Highway System (NHS) and other principal arterials and intermodal connectors.  The map includes interstates, non-interstate Strategic Highway Networks (STRAHNET), STRAHNET Connectors, other NHS, approved intermodals, segments in dual designated as both an Approved Intermodal Connector and STRAHNET, and principal arterial added to the NHS under MAP-21. Highways are most present in the densely populated urban centers in the northeast and parts and the Midwest, south, and west.

MAP-21 principal arterials = those rural and urban roads serving major population centers not already categorized.
