National Transit Map Version 3

Monday, April 30, 2018

Monday, April 30, 2018 – The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) today released version three of the National Transit Map; a geospatial database containing information from hundreds of transit agencies that provide data about their stops, routes, and schedules. The national map of fixed-guideway and fixed-route transit service in America allows companies to understand where transit may assist business development by providing better access to talent and customers. The data, compiled from General Transit Feed Specification (GTFS) files, details the operations of close to 300 transit agencies including nearly 500,000 stops and over 60,000 routes. This third version of the map contains data for the top 25 urban transit agencies with fixed route service, 88 percent of the top 50 agencies, and just over one-third of all urban transit agencies with fixed route service. This latest version is enhanced by the addition of Agency Service Boundaries, Metropolitan Planning Organizations, and the ability to separate routes by transit type. DOT is working to bring additional transit agencies on board for the fourth version of the map, scheduled to be released in September. Technical contact: Derald Dudley, 202-309-0940.
