National Transportation Atlas Database Spring 2018 Update
Friday, April 20, 2018 - The Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) has released the National Transportation Atlas Database (NTAD) spring 2018 update with three new data sets and eight updated data sets. The NTAD is a compilation of geospatial data sets representing the Nation’s transportation infrastructure, containing roadways, railways, and airports.
The new data sets are (1) a Marine Highways Layer that contains the locations of all 24 navigable waterways, which have been designated as Marine Highways by the Secretary of Transportation; (2) the National Port Readiness Network (NPRN) or the Strategic Ports Layer, that consists of 17 strategic commercial ports, which can support force deployment during contingencies and other defense emergencies; and (3) the Bikeshare Stations Layer showing the locations of fixed bikeshare stations open to the general public throughout the U.S. The Bikeshare Stations Layer currently includes 4,911 stations, operating in more than 150 cities, with new and existing bikeshare systems collectively adding 1,585 stations over the last year and a half.
Also in this version are U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ (USACE) maritime data including ports data and waterway networks and congressional district data identifying newly elected members of Congress. The updated NTAD is available for download in comma separated values (CSV), Keyhole Markup Language (KML), and shapefile formats, through the BTS Geospatial Data Catalog. Additionally, Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) standard Web Feature Services (WFS) are available for most NTAD data sets. BTS now uses a dynamic NTAD publication cycle, making updated data available throughout the year when they become available. See @TransportStats on Twitter for announcements of additional data set releases throughout the year. Contacts: Press: Dave Smallen: david.smallen@dot.gov or (202) 366-5568.
