Transportation Producer Price Index – January 2026

Today, the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) released the change in the costs faced by producers purchasing transportation services and industries producing them, from January 2025 to January 2026, as measured by the Producer Price Index (PPI). The PPI measures inflation from the perspective of costs to industry or producers of products.

Transportation equipment PPI indicate the changes in transportation equipment prices faced by transportation providers, and any increase, increases providers costs. The PPI shows that prices increased for freight transportation and equipment 2.3% in January 2026 from January 2025.

The figure is a line graph showing the producer price index (PPI) for transportation services (air, rail, truck, water, and arrangement of freight and cargo) compared to all services. The x-axis shows months from January 2019 to January 2026. The y-axis is the index value with January 2019 set to 100. Data are not adjusted for seasonality. From January 2025 to January 2026, air PPI, rail, truck, and water PPI grew 1.7%, 0.3%, 2.0%, and 1.0%, respectively, while arrangement of freight and cargo declined 0.4%. In comparison, all services (transportation and non-transportation grew 2.9%.

Increases in transportation services PPI indicate increases in production costs faced by industries purchasing the services. From January 2025 to January 2026, the transportation services PPI changed, by mode, as compared to all transportation and non-transportation services:

  • Air: +1.7%
  • Rail: +0.3%
  • Truck: +2.0%
  • Water: +1.0%
  • Arrangement of freight and cargo: -0.4%
  • All services (transportation and non-transportation): +2.9%

Transportation contributed 9.2% to the overall increase in costs faced by producers for transportation and non-transportation services.
