Transportation Statistical Annual Report 2023

The Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) is pleased to release the 29th edition of the Transportation Statistical Annual Report (TSAR).  The 2023 TSAR is a collection of key transportation indicators and contextual information to understand the extent, use, condition, performance, and consequences of the nation’s transportation system.

The 2023 TSAR is organized into 7 focus areas that reflect the topics in BTS’s legislative mandate, including some new data items. The report includes:

  • State of the System, 
  • Passenger Travel and Equity, 
  • Freight and Supply Chain, 
  • Transportation Economics, 
  • Transportation Safety, 
  • Energy and Sustainability 
  • State of Transportation Statistics 
     

The 2023 TSAR includes a section on emerging trends in each of the 6 focus areas:

  • The State of the System highlights recovery from the COVID-19 Pandemic.
  • Passenger Travel and Equity highlights COVID-19 impacts on travel.
  • Freight and Supply Chain includes disruptions from drought.
  • Transportation Economics discusses transportation’s share of inflation.
  • Transportation Safety explores the new normal in fatality and injury statistics.
  • Energy and Sustainability discusses the transition to new energy sources for transportation.

 
The 2023 TSAR also focuses on closing data gaps and improving how transportation statistics are collected, compiled, analyzed, and published.
