U.S. Airlines June 2020 Fuel Use Up 25% from May

The Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) today released U.S. airlines’ June Fuel Cost and Consumption numbers.

Fuel consumed by U.S. airlines scheduled service:

June 2019                    1.6 billion gallons
May 2020                      453 million gallons
June 2020                      558 million gallons  

June 2020 fuel consumption was 23% higher than May 2020 and 25% higher than April 2020, which was the lowest monthly fuel usage on record dating back to 2000.

Fuel cost per gallon for U.S. airlines scheduled service:

The June 2020 cost per gallon ($1.08) for aviation fuel was up 5 cents from May 2020 ($1.03), which was the lowest since April 2004 ($1.01).

 

Total fuel cost for U.S. airlines scheduled service:

June 2019                      $3.2 billion
May 2020                       $466 million
June 2020                       $604 million

Total fuel cost in June 2020 was 30% higher than in May 2020, which was the lowest on record dating back to 2000.

Preliminary fuel cost and consumption numbers are industry summaries only. Airline fuel costs may be affected by hedging, contracts that allow airlines to limit exposure to future changes in fuel prices. The monthly web update with July data is scheduled for Sept. 2.

Individual airline numbers  through March are available on the BTS website. Individual airline numbers for April, May and June will be available with the BTS second-quarter 2020 financial release on Sept. 14.
