Long Distance Trips are more than 50 miles from home to the furthest destination.

HOW WE TRAVEL FOR BUSINESS

  • The personal vehicle is the dominant mode for business travel
  • Eight out of 10 long-distance business trips are by personal vehicle
    • 16 percent of long distance business trips are by air
    • 3 percent of long distance trips are by other modes
  • Use of air travel becomes more frequent as trip distance gets longer, when traveling:
    • 50-99 miles – 97 percent of trips are made by personal vehicle
    • 100-249 miles – 94 percent of trips are made by personal vehicle
    • 250-499 miles – 67 percent of trips are made by personal vehicle
    • 500-749 miles – 64 percent of trips are made by air travel
    • 1500+ miles – 90 percent of trips are made by air travel

HOW FAR WE TRAVEL

  • Americans total more than 405 million long-distance business trips per year
  • The median distance for a business trip is 123 miles
  • The median distance for a long distance commuting trip is 69 miles

WHO TRAVELS

  • More than half of all long distance business travel is made by professional, managerial or technical workers
  • More than half of all business travel is made by individuals age 30 to 49
  • Over one-fourth of all business travel is made by those who earn $100,000 or more annually
  • Almost eight out of every 10 business trips (77%) are made by men
