Rural Airports
OVERVIEW
The Bureau of Transportation Statistics, part of the Office of the Research and Technology Administration, compiles the list of rural airports annually for the Treasury Department/IRS. This list is used by airlines to assist in establishing air fares. For travel to and from airports defined as “rural airports,” the ad valorem ticket tax was reduced and, presently, flight segments involving the last segment into or first segment out of a rural airport are exempt from the segment fee. 2nd-Quarter 2017 Air Fare Data
The average domestic air fare, adjusted for inflation, decreased to $356 in the second quarter of 2017, down 0.9 percent from $359 in the second quarter of 2016 but up 1.2 percent from $352 in the first quarter of 2017 (Tables 1, 3), the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) reported today.
