December 2019 Freight Transportation Services Index (TSI)
The Freight Transportation Services Index (TSI), which is based on the amount of freight carried by the for-hire transportation industry, fell 0.9% in December from November, falling for the second consecutive month to its lowest level since August 2018, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS).
For the year, the index fell 0.8% from December 2018 to December 2019, the first annual decline since 2015. The decline in 2019 followed a rise of 2.9% from December 2017 to December 2018 (Tables 1, 2, and 2A).
In the fourth quarter of 2019, the freight TSI fell 1.0%, the second consecutive quarterly decline. It was the largest decline in any quarter since the fourth quarter of 2015 when the index fell 2.2% (Table 10).

November 2019 North American Transborder Freight Numbers
Transborder freight between the U.S. and other North American countries (Canada and Mexico) in November 2019:
- Total Transborder Freight: $99.0 billion of transborder freight moved by all modes of transportation, down 3.9% compared to November 2018
- Most-used mode: Trucks moved $62.7 billion of freight, down 4.1% compared to November 2018
- Second most-used mode: Railways moved $14.0 billion of freight, down 7.4% compared to November 2018
National Transportation Atlas Database Winter 2020 Update
Friday, January 24, 2020 - The Winter 2020 update to the National Transportation Atlas Database (NTAD) was released today with one new dataset and 11 updated datasets.
NTAD is a Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) compilation of geospatial datasets representing the nation’s transportation infrastructure, containing roadways, railways, waterways, and airports.
