February 2020 Freight Transportation Services Index (TSI)

The Freight Transportation Services Index (TSI), which is based on the amount of freight carried by the for-hire transportation industry, rose 0.2% in February from January, rising for the second consecutive month, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics’ (BTS). From February 2019 to February 2020, the index rose 0.1% compared to a rise of 2.6% from February 2018 to February 2019 and a rise of 7.2% from February 2017 to February 2018 (Tables 1, 2, and 2A).

U.S. airlines carried 0.7% less freight by weight in January 2020 than in January 2019, according to preliminary data filed with the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) by the 15 airlines that carry the most freight.

The 15 airlines carry 97% of the total freight by weight on U.S. airlines.

U.S. airlines carried 5.6% more scheduled service passengers in January 2020 than in January 2019, according to preliminary data filed with the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) by the 25 airlines that carry the most passengers.

The 25 airlines carry 99% of the total passengers traveling on U.S. airlines.
