Miles of Travel and Fuel Use by Light-Duty Vehicles 1965-2021

Line graph showing miles of travel in millions and fuel use, measure by gallons in million, by light-duty vehicles from 1965 to 2021. Vehicle travel and vehicle-miles traveled adjusted for rebound effect increased over time until 2019. Fuel consumption also increased but at a slower rate. Estimated annual fuel savings remained at zero until 1980 and then continually increased until 2019. In 2020, all estimates saw a sharp decline but increased into 2021.
