Today, the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) released the 2024 State-Level Transportation Public Finance Statistics (TPFS). The State-level TPFS provides state-by-state transportation-related revenue and expenditures for rail, highway, and air modes. This is in addition to the nationally aggregated tabulations of the TPFS data released May of 2026, now referred to as the Aggregate State TPFS. 

The states with the highest per capita state and local transportation expenditures are Alaska ($3,229) and New York ($2,413) while the states with the lowest are Alabama ($643) and Mississippi ($670). Explore this data by type of revenue or expenditure, by state and/or by mode in our data tabulation tool.

The State-Level TPFS includes data from 2020 to 2024, except for 2023 state level highway data. FHWA did not release the local highway revenue and expenditures data for 2023, thus BTS omitted the highways mode in the 2023 state-level data. Going forward BTS will continue to release state-level data annually, the release schedule will depend on data availability.
