Freight Analysis Framework 12/22/22 Updated

Thursday, December 22, 2022

The Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) today released an updated version of its Freight Analysis Framework (FAF) commodity flow dataset, which provides estimates for tonnage, value, and ton-miles by origin-destination pair of FAF regions, commodity type, and mode for:

  • Base year (2017)
  • Annual estimates (2018–2020)
  • Forecast year estimates (2022–2050)
  • State-level historical trend estimates (1997–2012)

The release of FAF 5.4.1 is available at https://www.bts.gov/faf and includes new annual estimates for 2018-2020 with updated air cargo imports, which replace the previous estimates. This release also incorporates revisions to coal exports. Starting with FAF 5.4, annual estimates for 2020 reflect data collected during the COVID pandemic. Note that 2022 statistics are forecasts based on the 2017 benchmark and do not reflect data collected during the COVID pandemic.
