July 2015 U.S. Airline Traffic Data
The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) reported today that U.S. airlines’ systemwide (domestic and international) scheduled service load factor – a measure of the use of airline capacity – rose to 84.2 percent in July, seasonally adjusted, rising for the third consecutive month (Table 1). Seasonal adjustment allows the comparing of monthly load factors to all other months.
Load Factor on All U.S. Scheduled Airlines (Domestic & International),
July 2010 - July 2015
For July, U.S. airlines reported seasonally-adjusted all-time monthly highs in passenger enplanements, Revenue Passenger-Miles (RPMs) and Available Seat-Miles (ASMs). Systemwide passenger enplanements in July (66.7 million) exceeded the previous record in June 2015 by 0.8 percent (Table 8). Systemwide RPMs in July (76.4 billion) exceeded the previous record in June 2015 by 1.8 percent (Table 4). Systemwide ASMs in July (90.8 billion) exceeded the previous record in June 2015 by 0.8 percent (Table 6).
The July load factor of 84.2 was the second highest of all-time, below the all-time seasonally-adjusted high of 84.5 in January 2014 (Table 2). Load factor is a measure of the use of aircraft capacity that compares the system use, measured in Revenue Passenger-Miles (RPMs) as a proportion of system capacity, measured in Available Seat-Miles (ASMs).
The seasonally-adjusted load factor rose in July following two consecutive months of growth (Table 1). The load factor rose from June to July because passenger travel grew faster (1.8 percent increase in RPMs) than system capacity (0.8 percent increase in ASMs) (Tables 3, 5).
Trends:
Seasonally-adjusted
July was the fifth consecutive month in which RPMs, ASMs and passenger enplanements reached seasonally-adjusted all-time highs (Tables 4, 6, 8). The growth in RPMs from June to July (1.8 percent) outpaced the growth in capacity (0.8 percent). As a result, the July load factor (84.2) was the second highest all-time, below only January 2014 (84.5) (Tables 1, 3, 5).
Seasonally-adjusted trends are for the time period January 2000 to present.
Unadjusted
Systemwide: July load factor (87.4) was the highest all-time monthly load factor and was up from the all-time July high set in 2011 (86.9) (Table 13). The number of passengers, RPMs and ASMs all reached record highs for any month.
Domestic: July load factor (88.1) was the highest all-time monthly domestic load factor and was up from the all-time July high set in 2014 (87.8). The number of passengers, RPMs and ASMs all reached record highs for any month.
International: July load factor (85.8) was down from the all-time July high set in 2013 (86.9). The number of passengers, RPMs and ASMs all reached record highs for any month.
For the first seven months of 2014, January through July, systemwide load factor (83.6) was down from the all-time high set in 2014 (83.8). The number of systemwide passengers, RPMs and ASMs all reached record highs for the first seven months of any year.
Unadjusted trends are for the time period January 1996 to present.
Seasonally-Adjusted Air Travel
Seasonally-Adjusted Revenue Passenger-Miles
RPMs rose 1.8 percent from June to July, the sixth consecutive month of growth (Table 3).
RPMs of 76.4 billion in July were the highest all-time seasonally-adjusted total. Seven of the top 10 all-time highest months for RPMs have been in 2015 and three were in 2014 (Table 4).
Seasonally-Adjusted Available Seat-Miles
ASMs rose 0.8 percent from June to July, the fifth consecutive month of growth (Table 5).
ASMs of 90.8 billion in July were the highest all-time seasonally-adjusted total. Six of the top 10 all-time highest months for ASMs have been in 2015 and one was in 2014 (Table 6).
Seasonally-Adjusted Passenger Enplanements
Systemwide: Systemwide passenger enplanements rose 0.8 percent from June to July, rising for the fifth consecutive month (Table 7). The systemwide total rose from June to July because of growth in domestic (0.8 percent) and international enplanements (1.2 percent) (Tables 9, 11).
Enplanements of 66.7 million in July were the highest all-time seasonally-adjusted total. Seven of the top 10 all-time highest months for enplanements have been in 2015 (Table 8).
Domestic: Enplanements on domestic flights rose 0.8 percent, rising for the fifth consecutive month (Table 9). Domestic enplanements in July (58.1 million) were the highest all-time seasonally-adjusted total. Five of the top 10 all-time highest months for domestic enplanements have been in 2015. No other post-recession months are among the top 10 all-time highest months for domestic enplanements (Table 10).
International: U.S. airlines’ international enplanements rose 1.2 percent, rising for the fifth consecutive month. The July level (8.6 million) was the highest all-time seasonally-adjusted total. Six of the top 10 all-time highest months for international enplanements have been in 2015 and four were in 2014 (Tables 11, 12).
Unadjusted Tables
Unadjusted Load Factor
U.S. airlines’ systemwide (domestic and international) scheduled service load factor – a measure of the use of airline capacity – was 87.4 percent in July, up from June and up from July 2014 (Table 13).
The July load factor of 87.4 was the all-time unadjusted high (Table 14).
The load factor rose year-to-year because passenger travel grew faster (5.5 percent increase in RPMs) than system capacity (4.6 percent increase in ASMs) (Tables 15, 17).
Unadjusted Revenue Passenger-Miles
RPMs in July increased 6.7 percent from June and increased 5.5 percent from July 2014 (Table 15).
RPMs of 88.3 billion in July were the all-time unadjusted high. Two of the top 10 all-time highest months for RPMs have been in 2015 and three were in 2014 (Table 16).
Unadjusted Available Seat-Miles
ASMs in July increased 5.5 percent from June and increased 4.6 percent from July 2014 (Table 17).
ASMs of 101.0 billion in July were the all-time unadjusted high. Three of the top 10 all-time highest months for ASMs have been in 2015 and two were in 2014 (Table 18).
Unadjusted Passenger Enplanements
Systemwide: Systemwide unadjusted passenger enplanements in July 2015 (75.6 million) rose 6.1 percent from June and 5.2 percent from July 2014 (Table 19).
The July 2015 systemwide enplanement total (75.6 million) was the all-time unadjusted high (Table 20).
Domestic: Domestic unadjusted passenger enplanements in July 2015 (65.1 million) rose 5.4 percent from June (61.8 million) and rose 5.5 percent from July 2014 (61.8 million) (Table 21).
Domestic unadjusted passenger enplanements in July 2015 (65.1 million) were the all-time unadjusted high (Table 22).
International: International unadjusted passenger enplanements in July 2015 (10.5 million) rose 11.1 percent from June (9.5 million) and rose 3.7 percent from July 2014 (10.1 million) (Table 23).
International unadjusted passenger enplanements in July 2015 (10.5 million) were the all-time unadjusted high (Table 24).
Explanation of seasonal adjustment
When the primary purpose is to examine monthly shifts in transportation services output and analyze short-term trends, the variation introduced by normal seasonal changes must be removed from the data. Transportation is highly seasonal, and without adjustment, the data do not give an accurate picture of underlying changes in aviation and passenger travel.
Seasonal adjustment of the data removes the seasonal events that follow a regular seasonal pattern. Changes that are not due to seasonality, such as a change in air travel resulting from economic conditions become more readily apparent.
The aviation data are seasonally adjusted for the effects of trading day, moving holidays, and data outliers.

International totals in this press release consist of all U.S. carrier operations to and from the U.S. and from one foreign point to another foreign point. TranStats T-100 systemwide and international totals do not include U.S. carriers’ foreign point-to-point flights. For July, U.S. carriers reported 108,163 foreign point-to-point passengers. For January through July, U.S. carriers reported 764,333 foreign point-to-point passengers.
Data are subject to revision. BTS has scheduled Nov. 13 for the release of August traffic data. None of the data are from samples so measures of statistical significance do not apply.
