Motor Fuel Prices – September 2026

Today, the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) released monthly motor fuels prices for September 2026.

In September 2026, the average price for regular motor gasoline was $4.36 per gallon; up 7.3% from August 2026 and up 37.6% from September 2025.

The figure is a line chart showing two lines – one for the price of diesel fuel and one for regular gasoline (all formulations) by month from September 2025 to September 2026. The price for diesel fuel ranges from $3.75 in September 2025 to $6.29 in September 2026. The price for regular gasoline ranges from $3.17 in September 2025 to $4.36 in September 2026.

By region, the average price for regular motor gasoline in September 2026 and year-over-year change was:

  • West Coast: $5.54 (up 31.1%)
  • Rocky Mountain: $4.44 (up 39.6%)
  • Central Atlantic: $4.37 (up 37.4%)
  • New England: $4.31 (up 40.0%)
  • Midwest: $4.17 (up 38.3%)
  • Lower Atlantic: $4.07 (up 39.8%)
  • Gulf Coast: $3.86 (up 41.2%)

The average price for diesel no. 2, at $6.29 per gallon, reached a new all-time high in September 2026, up 9.3% from the previous all-time high reached in June 2022, up 15.2% from August 2026, and up 67.8% from September 2025.
