Passenger Travel Facts and Figures 2016 Released

Friday, September 9, 2016

Friday, September 9, 2016 - The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) today released Passenger Travel Facts and Figures 2016, a report detailing the characteristics and trends of personal travel in the United States; the network over which passenger travel takes place; and the related economic, safety, and environmental implications. The 94-page report discusses the basic demographic and economic characteristics of the United States that contribute to the demand for passenger travel; examines travel patterns by household characteristics, trip purpose, and transportation mode; provides information on the extent, use and performance of the passenger transportation system; discusses the economic characteristics of passenger travel and tourism; and describes the safety, energy, and environmental impacts of passenger travel. This report is intended as a companion to Freight Facts and Figures, which focuses on these same topics as they relate to Freight movement. Passenger Travel Facts and Figures 2016 also compliments information provided in Beyond Traffic 2045, a framework for opening discussion about future needs, goals, and decision making regarding multiple modes and the impacts of the transportation system on the nation.
