Commodity Flow Survey

The Commodity Flow Survey (CFS) is the primary source of national and state-level data on domestic freight shipments by American establishments. Data are provided on the types of commodities being moved, along with their origins and destinations, values, weights, modes of transportation, distance shipped, and ton-miles of commodities shipped. The CFS is a component of the Census Bureau’s economic census and is conducted every five years.  The first CFS was conducted in 1993 and data collection for the 2017 CFS is currently underway.
