June 2017 Freight Transportation Services Index (TSI)

The Freight Transportation Services Index (TSI), which is based on the amount of freight carried by the for-hire transportation industry, fell 0.8 percent in June from May. The seasonally adjusted index fell after reaching an all-time high in May, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics’ (BTS). The June 2017 index level (126.2) was 33.3 percent above the April 2009 low during the most recent recession.

Freight by Mode since the Recession

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics’ (BTS) has shown that all but one of the major freight modes grew since the recession that ended in June 2009 with rail intermodal growing the fastest, rising 50.6 percent from June 2009 (the end of the economic recession) to December 2016.

May 2017 Freight Transportation Services Index (TSI)

The Freight Transportation Services Index (TSI), which is based on the amount of freight carried by the for-hire transportation industry, rose 2.2 percent in May from April, rising after a two-month decline, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics’ (BTS). The May 2017 index level (126.8) was 33.9 percent above the April 2009 low during the most recent recession.

April 2017 Freight Transportation Services Index (TSI)

The Freight Transportation Services Index (TSI), which is based on the amount of freight carried by the for-hire transportation industry, fell 0.6 percent in April from March, falling for the second consecutive month after reaching an all-time high in February, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics’ (BTS). The April 2017 index level (122.8) was 29.7 percent above the April 2009 low during the most recent recession (Tables 1, 2, and 2A).

March 2017 Freight Transportation Services Index (TSI)

The Freight Transportation Services Index (TSI), which is based on the amount of freight carried by the for-hire transportation industry, fell 1.5 percent in March from February, falling after reaching an all-time high in February, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics’ (BTS). The March 2017 index level (124.0) was 30.9 percent above the April 2009 low during the most recent recession (Tables 1, 2, and 2A).

February 2017 Freight Transportation Services Index (TSI)

The Freight Transportation Services Index (TSI), which is based on the amount of freight carried by the for-hire transportation industry, rose 1.5 percent in February from January, rising after remaining unchanged in January from December, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics’ (BTS). The February 2017 index level (126.4) was 33.5 percent above the April 2009 low during the most recent recession (Tables 1, 2, and 2A).
