Transborder freight between the U.S. and other North American countries (Canada and Mexico) in August 2018:

  • Most-used mode: Truck moved $66.6 billion of freight, up 5.7 percent compared to August 2017
  • Second mode: Rail moved $15.5 billion of freight, up 5.5 percent compared to August 2017

Truck Freight: $66.6 billion (62.3 percent of all transborder freight)

  • By border:
U.S.-Canada: $29.9 billion (56.0 percent of all northern border freight)
U.S.-Mexico: $36.7 billion (68.6 percent of all southern border freight)
  • Compared to previous year:
U.S.-Canada up 2.4 percent
U.S.-Mexico up 8.5 percent
  • Busiest three truck border ports (46.9 percent of total transborder truck freight):
    • Laredo, TX:    $16.5 billion
    • Detroit, MI:       $9.3 billion
    • El Paso, TX:      $5.5 billion
  • Top three truck commodities (51.2 percent of total transborder truck freight):
    • Computers and parts:              $12.6 billion
    • Electrical machinery:              $11.0 billion
    • Motor vehicles and parts:       $10.5 billion

 

Rail Freight: $15.5 billion (14.5 percent of all transborder freight)

  • By border:
U.S.-Canada: $8.7 billion (16.2 percent of all northern border freight)
U.S.-Mexico: $6.9 billion (12.8 percent of all southern border freight)
  • Compared to previous year:
U.S.-Canada up 10.0 percent
U.S.-Mexico up 0.3 percent
  • Busiest three rail border ports (51.4 percent of total transborder rail freight):
    • Laredo, TX:                $3.7 billion
    • Detroit, MI:                 $2.3 billion
    • Port Huron: MI:          $2.0 billion

 

  • Top three rail commodities (58.9 percent of total transborder rail freight):
    • Motor vehicles and parts:       $7.1 billion
    • Mineral fuels:                          $1.1 billion
    • Plastics:                                   $0.9 billion

Total Freight: $106.9 billion of transborder freight moved by all modes of transportation, up 9.7 percent from August 2017.

Almost all (99.5 percent) of pipeline freight between the U.S. and Canada were mineral fuels, primarily oil and gas. Most of these freight flows were on pipelines linking Canada and the American Midwest.

Of freight by vessel between the U.S. and Mexico, $3.5 billion, or 55.8 percent were mineral fuels, primarily oil and gas shipments between Gulf of Mexico ports in the U.S. and Mexico – with over half of those shipments going through Texas ports.
