First Quarter of OD40 Data is Live

Tuesday, February 17, 2026

Last August, the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) launched the Origin-Destination Survey of Airline Passengers (OD40) program. OD40 was a major milestone for the BTS and the aviation industry, as the amount of origin-destination data increased from a 10 percent sample of tickets collected quarterly from large carriers to a 40 percent sample of tickets collected monthly from existing and new reporting carriers. Data collected includes the fare and itinerary of each sampled ticket.

Today, BTS announced the first OD40 data release for July-September 2025. This key dataset, known as DB1C, provides detailed information on airline passenger travel patterns within the United States.

The DB1C dataset is a monthly 40 percent sample of airline tickets reported by U.S. air carriers. DB1C contains itinerary-level information, including origin and destination airports, connecting points, passenger counts, and fare details. These data support analysis of air travel demand, network connectivity, fare trends, and overall transportation system performance.

This release represents the first production dataset made publicly available through a newly developed BTS data processing system designed to accommodate significant changes to the Origin–Destination Survey resulting from the final rule published on December 31, 2022. The new system is intended to improve data quality, processing efficiency, and the long-term sustainability of BTS aviation statistics, while maintaining continuity with the historical Origin-Destination Survey series.

Because this is the inaugural public production release from a newly developed system, BTS welcomes feedback from data users. Stakeholder input will help identify any issues, clarify documentation, and guide future enhancements to the DB1C dataset and related products. Users are encouraged to review the data and share comments or questions with BTS at OAI.OD40.Support@dot.gov.
