Transportation Producer Price Index – July 2026

Today, the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) reported that the transportation equipment Producer Price Index (PPI) rose 2.4% from July 2025 to July 2026. The PPI, produced and published by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), measures inflation from the perspective of the producers (sellers) of products. 

The figure is a line graph showing the producer price index (PPI) for five freight transportation services compared to all services by month from January 2019 to July 2026. The y-axis shows the index value, not seasonally adjusted, from January 2019In July 2026, the arrangement of freight and cargo PPI was +36.0%, while truck, air, water, rail, and all (transportation and non-transportation) services were +36.0%, +16.4%, +66.7%, +24.8%, and +35.1%, respectively, from January 2019.

Over the same 12-month period, the change in the PPI for transportation services varied by mode:

  • Air: +7.1%
  • Rail: +1.3%
  • Truck: +10.9%
  • Water: +17.2%
  • Arrangement of freight and cargo: +2.2%

In comparison, all services (transportation and non-transportation) rose 5.1% over the same timeframe.

Transportation contributed 12.7% to the overall increase in the PPI for all services.
