October 2019 Freight Transportation Services Index (TSI)

The Freight Transportation Services Index (TSI), which is based on the amount of freight carried by the for-hire transportation industry, rose 1.3% in October from September, rising after a one-month decline, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics’ (BTS). From October 2018 to October 2019, the index rose 0.5% compared to a rise of 6.8% from October 2017 to October 2018 (Tables 1, 2, and 2A).

U.S. Transportation Secretary Announces Solving for Safety Visualization Challenge Winner

WASHINGTON – U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine L. Chao today announced University of Central Florida (UCF) as the winner of the Solving for Safety Visualization Challenge. The challenge is a $350,000 national, multistage competition seeking innovative analytical visualization tools to improve safety on our nation’s road and rail systems.

“Safety is the Department’s top priority and the Solving for Safety Visualization Challenge, which the University of Central Florida won impressively, is part of ongoing efforts to save lives and prevent injuries,” said Secretary Elaine L. Chao.

September 2019 North American Transborder Freight Numbers

Transborder freight between the U.S. and other North American countries (Canada and Mexico) in September 2019:

  • Total Transborder Freight: $101.4 billion of transborder freight moved by all modes of transportation, down 0.2% compared to September 2018
  • Most-used mode: Trucks moved $64.0 billion of freight, up 1.1% compared to September 2018
  • Second mode: Railways moved $14.8 billion of freight, down 1.9% compared to September 2018
