October 2018 North American Transborder Freight Numbers

Transborder freight between the U.S. and other North American countries (Canada and Mexico) in October 2018:

• Most-used mode: Truck moved $70.1 billion of freight, up 9.0 percent compared to October 2017
• Second mode: Rail moved $15.8 billion of freight, up 4.0 percent compared to October 2017

October 2018 Freight Transportation Services Index (TSI)

The Freight Transportation Services Index (TSI), which is based on the amount of freight carried by the for-hire transportation industry, rose 2.0 percent in October from September, rising for the second consecutive month to reach a new all-time high, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics’ (BTS). The October 2018 index level (138.8) was 46.4 percent above the April 2009 low during the most recent recession.
