U.S. Transportation Secretary Announces Solving for Safety Visualization Challenge Winner
WASHINGTON – U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine L. Chao today announced University of Central Florida (UCF) as the winner of the Solving for Safety Visualization Challenge. The challenge is a $350,000 national, multistage competition seeking innovative analytical visualization tools to improve safety on our nation’s road and rail systems.
“Safety is the Department’s top priority and the Solving for Safety Visualization Challenge, which the University of Central Florida won impressively, is part of ongoing efforts to save lives and prevent injuries,” said Secretary Elaine L. Chao.

September 2019 North American Transborder Freight Numbers
Transborder freight between the U.S. and other North American countries (Canada and Mexico) in September 2019:
- Total Transborder Freight: $101.4 billion of transborder freight moved by all modes of transportation, down 0.2% compared to September 2018
- Most-used mode: Trucks moved $64.0 billion of freight, up 1.1% compared to September 2018
- Second mode: Railways moved $14.8 billion of freight, down 1.9% compared to September 2018
September 2019 U.S. Passenger Airline Employment Data
The 21 U.S. scheduled passenger airlines employed 2.3% more workers in September 2019 than in September 2018:
- September’s 450,517 full-time equivalents (FTEs) was the highest employment total since March 2003 (458,598 FTEs).
- September was the 71st consecutive month that U.S. scheduled passenger airline FTEs exceeded the same month of the previous year.
