May 2019 Freight Transportation Services Index (TSI)
The Freight Transportation Services Index (TSI), which is based on the amount of freight carried by the for-hire transportation industry, fell 0.7% in May from April, falling for the second consecutive month. From May 2018 to May 2019, the index declined 0.2% compared to a rise of 8.6% for the previous year (Tables 1, 2, and 2A).
April 2019 North American Transborder Freight Numbers
Transborder freight between the U.S. and other North American countries (Canada and Mexico) in April 2019:
- Total Transborder Freight: $104.5 billion of transborder freight moved by all modes of transportation, up 1.8% compared to April 2018
- Most-used mode: Truck moved $65.1 billion of freight, down 1.0% compared to April 2018
- Second mode: Rail moved $15.6 billion of freight, up 6.3% compared to April 2018

April 2019 U.S. Passenger Airline Employment Data
The 21 U.S. scheduled passenger airlines employed 2.3% more workers in April 2019 than in April 2018:
- April’s 446,323 full-time equivalents (FTE) was the highest employment total for any month since April 2003 (449,288 FTEs).
- April was the 66th consecutive month that U.S. scheduled passenger airline FTEs exceeded the same month of the previous year.
