2nd-Quarter 2013 Domestic Air Fare Down 3.6% from 2nd Quarter 2012 (Adjusted for Inflation)

The average domestic air fare decreased to $378 in the second quarter of 2013, down 3.6 percent from the average fare of $392 in the second quarter of 2012, measured in constant 2013 dollars (Table 1), the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) reported today. Huntsville, Ala., had the highest average fare, $547, while Atlantic City, N.J., had the lowest, $159 (Table 6).

Directive for 2014 Airline On-Time Reporting

Friday, November 1, 2013 - The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) today issued its annual directive detailing the requirements for the reporting of airline on-time data for 2014.

August 2013 Passenger Airline Employment Down 2.2 Percent from August 2012

U.S. scheduled passenger airlines employed 380,564 workers in August 2013, 2.2 percent fewer than in August 2012, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) reported today. August was the 12th consecutive month that full-time equivalent (FTE) employment for U.S. scheduled passenger carriers was below that of the same month of the previous year (Tables 1, 2).

Airline On-Time Performance in August Down From Previous Year, Up From July

WASHINGTON – The nation’s largest airlines posted an on-time arrival rate of 78.8 percent in August, down from the 79.1 percent on-time rate from August 2012, but up from the 73.1 percent mark from July 2013, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Air Travel Consumer Report released today.

Freight Shipments Rose 0.4% in August from July

The amount of freight carried by the for-hire transportation industry rose 0.4 percent in August from July, rising for the second consecutive month to reach the second highest level in the history of the Bureau of Transportation Statistics’ (BTS) Freight Transportation Services Index (TSI).

Largest Airlines Report Larger Net Profit in 2nd-Quarter of 2013

The largest scheduled passenger airlines reported a net profit of $2.1 billion in the second quarter of 2013, an increase from a profit of $700 million in the second quarter of 2012, the U.S. Department of Transportations Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) reported today in a release of preliminary data (Table 1).

Four of the five transportation modes carried more U.S.-NAFTA trade in July 2013 than in July 2012 as the value of overall U.S. trade with its NAFTA partners rose 6.3 percent from year to year, according to the July North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) freight data released today by the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) of the U.S. Department of Transportation (Table 1).
