August 2024 Freight Transportation Services Index (TSI) Up 1.1% from the Previous Month and Up 1.0% from the Same Month Last Year
The Freight Transportation Services Index (TSI), which is based on the amount of freight carried by the for-hire transportation industry, rose 1.1% in August from July, rising for the first month this quarter, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS). From August 2023 to August 2024 the index rose 1.0% (Tables 1, 2, and 2A).

Section 7308 of the FAST Act requires DOT to assemble and collect data on rail tank cars transporting Class 3 flammable liquids. The objective of this legislation is to track the progress in upgrading the rail tank car fleet to new safety requirements and to provide an annual status report to Congress.
