BTS Updates National Transportation Statistics 3/31/2025
The Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) today released its monthly update to National Transportation Statistics (NTS), a guide to historical national-level transportation trends.
Each month, BTS updates NTS with transportation statistics from across the following areas:
- The extent, condition, use, and performance of the physical transportation network and infrastructure;
- Safety information including accidents, crashes, fatalities, and injuries for each transportation mode and for hazardous materials movement;
- Transportation’s impact on the economy, including gross domestic product, employment by industry and occupation, and transportation-related consumer and Government expenditures; and
- Transportation’s impact on energy use.
This month, the following tables received new data:
- U.S. Public Road and Street Mileage by Functional System (1-5)
- Estimated U.S. Roadway Lane-Miles by Functional System (1-6, 1-6M)
- Gasoline Hybrid and Electric Vehicle Sales (1-19)
- Number of U.S. On-Road Motorcycles Registrations by type (1-21)
- Condition of U.S. Roadways by Functional System (1-27)
- Roadway Vehicle-Miles Traveled (VMT) and VMT per Lane-Mile by Functional System (1-36, 1-36M)
- Hazardous Materials Fatalities, Injuries, Accidents, and Property Damage Data (2-6)
- Railroad System Safety and Property Damage (2-43)
- Hazardous Liquid and Natural Gas Pipeline Safety and Property Damage Data (2-50)
- Average Cost of Owning and Operating an Automobile (3-17)
- Motor Vehicle Fuel Consumption and Travel (4-9, 4-9M)
- Light Duty Vehicle, Short Wheel Base and Motorcycle Fuel Consumption and Travel (4-11, 4-11M)
- Light Duty Vehicle, Long Wheel Base Fuel Consumption and Travel (4-12, 4-12M)
- Single-Unit 2-Axle 6-Tire or More Truck Fuel Consumption and Travel (4-13, 4-13M)
- Combination Truck Fuel Consumption and Travel (4-14, 4-14M)
- Bus Fuel Consumption and Travel (4-15, 4-15M)
- Bus Profile
NTS is a collection of transportation data first published by BTS in November 1971. NTS has grown to over 200 regularly updated datasets and tables after incorporating materials from other Department of Transportation programs.
