2018 Traffic Data for U.S Airlines and Foreign Airlines U.S. Flights

U.S. airlines and foreign airlines serving the U.S. carried an all-time high of 1.0 billion systemwide (domestic and international) scheduled service passengers in 2018, 4.8 percent more than the previous record high of 965.4 million reached in 2017. The year-over-year systemwide increase resulted from a 4.9 percent rise in the number of passengers on domestic flights (777.9 million passengers in 2018) and 4.4 percent growth in passengers on U.S. and foreign airlines’ flights to and from the U.S. (233.6 million passengers in 2018) (Tables 1, 1A, 5, 9). Systemwide passengers include those on scheduled domestic flights plus those on scheduled flights to and from the United States.

U.S. airlines carried an estimated 76.0 million systemwide (domestic and international) scheduled service passengers, seasonally-adjusted, in February 2019, up 0.6 percent from the January second estimate, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics’ (BTS) first February estimate.

The Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) today updated its web page with October data. The release consists of U.S. carrier summary data and domestic route data through October and U.S. and foreign carrier international data through July.

Estimated November 2018 U.S. Airline Traffic Data

U.S. airlines’ carried an estimated 74.1 million systemwide (domestic and international) scheduled service passengers, seasonally-adjusted, in November 2018, virtually unchanged from the October estimate, according to a Bureau of Transportation Statistics’ (BTS) first estimate.

U.S. airlines carried an estimated 75.3 million systemwide (domestic and international) scheduled service passengers, seasonally-adjusted, in October 2018, up 0.1 percent from the September estimate, according to a Bureau of Transportation Statistics’ (BTS) first estimate.

BTS’ October air traffic statistical estimate released today is based on U.S. airlines reported data through August. BTS will release a second forecast of U.S. airlines’ October air traffic on Dec. 13, followed by a release of the reported data on Jan. 12.
