Mid-September 2020 U.S. Passenger Airline Employment Down More Than 6,000 FTEs from Mid-August

The 23 U.S. scheduled passenger airlines employed 1.5% fewer full-time equivalents (FTEs) in mid-September 2020 than in mid-August 2020:

Mid-September’s total number of FTEs (404,869) was down 6,307 FTEs from mid-August 2020 (411,176 FTEs) and down 56,728 FTEs from mid-March 2020. Mid-September was the lowest FTE total for any month since February 2016 (403,917 FTEs).

Mid-September FTEs were down more than 47,000 FTEs, a 10.5% drop from mid-September 2019 (452,138 FTEs).  

Mid-August 2020 U.S. Passenger Airline Employment Down 4,000 FTEs from Mid-July

The 23 U.S. scheduled passenger airlines employed 1.0 % fewer full-time equivalents (FTEs) in mid-August 2020 than in mid-July 2020:Mid-August’s total number of FTEs (411,176) was down 4,000 FTEs from mid-July 2020 (415,154 FTEs) and down nearly 49,000 FTEs from mid-March 2020. August 2020 was the lowest FTE total for any August since 2015 (397,007 FTEs). Mid-August 2020 FTEs were down more than 38,000 FTEs, down 8.5%, from mid-August 2019 (449,550 FTEs).  

Mid-July 2020 U.S. Passenger Airline Employment Up 4,600 FTEs from Mid-June

The 23 U.S. scheduled passenger airlines employed 1.1 % more full-time equivalents (FTEs) in mid-July 2020 than in mid-June 2020:

Mid-July’s total number of FTEs (415,154) was up 4,600 FTEs from mid-June 2020 (410,557 FTEs) and down nearly 45,000 FTEs from mid-March 2020. July 2020 was the lowest FTE total for any July since 2016 (413,746 FTEs).

Mid-July 2020 FTEs were down more than 34,000 FTEs, down 7.7%, from mid-July 2019 (449,907 FTEs).  

Mid-July Airline Employment Up 7,000 from Mid-June

U.S. airlines employed 706,824 workers in the middle of July 2020, 7,101 more than in mid-June 2020 and 46,461 fewer than in March 2020. The July 2020 numbers consist of 597,982 full-time and 108,842 part-time workers.

Mid-June 2020 U.S. Passenger Airline Employment Down Over 1,000 FTEs from Mid-May

The 23 U.S. scheduled passenger airlines employed 0.3% fewer full-time equivalents (FTEs) in mid-June 2020 than in mid-May 2020:

  • Mid-June’s total number of FTEs (410,594) was down over 1,000 FTEs from mid-May 2020 (411,817 FTEs) and down more than 49,000 FTEs from mid-March 2020. It was the lowest FTE total for any month since May 2016 (410,338 FTEs).
  • Mid-June 2020 FTEs were down more than 39,000 FTEs (-8.7%) from June 2019 (449,775 FTEs).
