National Household Travel Survey

The 2001 National Household Travel Survey (NHTS) was a joint effort undertaken by the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) to collect data on the volumes and patterns of passenger transportation. The 2001 survey collected detailed information on both the long-distance and local travel by the American public. This included items such as the mode(s) of transportation, purpose of the trip, duration and distance, and accompanying household members.

Targeted Survey

The Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) develops targeted surveys to address transportation issues of special interest populations (i.e. elderly, pedestrians, etc...) identified by U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) agencies.

Targeted surveys may use telephone interviews, just like the Omnibus Survey does. But they also may use other data collection methods, such as focus groups, intercept surveys, mailout/mailback questionnaires, or web-based surveys.

National Census of Ferry Operators (NCFO)

On a biennial basis, the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) conducts a census of all ferry operators operating in the United States and its territories.  The information collected from the census is maintained in a national ferry database containing information regarding ferry routes, vessels, passengers and vehicles carried, funding sources and other information.  BTS conducted the initial NCFO in 2006 and has subsequently conducted the NCFO in 2008, 2010, 2014, and 2016. The data collection for the next NCFO will begin in the Spring of 2018.

Omnibus Surveys

The Omnibus Surveys were designed as a convenient way to get very quick input on transportation issues, as well as to gauge public satisfaction with the transportation system and government programs.

Transportation Statistics Annual Report

The Transportation Statistics Annual Report (TSAR) describes the Nation’s transportation system, the system’s performance, its contributions to the economy, and its effects on people and the environment. This report is based on information collected or compiled by the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS), a principle Federal statistical agency at the U.S. Department of Transportation.

National Transportation Statistics

National Transportation Statistics presents statistics on the U.S. transportation system, including its physical components, safety record, economic performance, the human and natural environment, and national security.  This is a large online document comprising more than 260 data tables plus data source and accuracy statements, glossary and a list of acronyms and initialisms.

Commodity Flow Survey

The Commodity Flow Survey (CFS) is the primary source of national and state-level data on domestic freight shipments by American establishments. Data are provided on the types of commodities being moved, along with their origins and destinations, values, weights, modes of transportation, distance shipped, and ton-miles of commodities shipped. The CFS is a component of the Census Bureau’s economic census and is conducted every five years.  The first CFS was conducted in 1993 and data collection for the 2017 CFS is currently underway.
