1st-Quarter 2012 Airline Financial Data: Largest Airlines Report Profit

Airline On-Time Performance in May Up from Previous Year, Down from April

April 2012 Airline System Traffic Up 1.6 Percent from April 2011

Thursday, July 19, 2012 - The U.S. Department of Transportations Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) reported today that U.S. airlines carried 61.5 million scheduled domestic and international passengers in April 2012, 1.5 percent more domestic passengers and 1.7 percent more international passengers than in April 2011.

1st-Quarter Domestic Air Fares Rose 4.8% from 1st Quarter 2011

Thursday, July 26, 2012 - Average domestic air fares rose to $373 in the first quarter of 2012, up 4.8 percent from the average fare of $356 in the first quarter of 2011 (Table 1), the U.S. Department of Transportations Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) reported today. Cincinnati had the highest average fare, $526, while Atlantic City, NJ, had the lowest, $157 (Table 3).

The 2012 edition features updated datasets from last year's NTAD.

May 2012 Surface Trade with Canada and Mexico Rose 8.3 Percent From May 2011

Tuesday, July 31, 2012 - Trade using surface transportation between the United States and its North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) partners, Canada and Mexico, was 8.3 percent higher in May 2012 than in May 2011, totaling $83.8 billion, unadjusted for inflation (Table 1 and Figure 1), according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) of the U.S. Department of Transportation. Adjusted for inflation and exchange rates, the May 2012 total was $60.7 billion in 2004 dollars, up 11.7 percent from May 2011.

Freight Shipments Fell 0.1% in June from May

Wednesday, August 8, 2012 - The amount of freight carried by the for-hire transportation industry fell 0.1 percent in June from May, following no change in the index from April to May, according to the U.S. Department of Transportations Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) Freight Transportation Services Index (TSI) released today. The June 2012 index level (109.5) was 16.1 percent above the April 2009 low during the recession (Tables 1, 2A).
