Second Quarter 2019 Air Fare Data

The second quarter 2019 average domestic itinerary air fare of $364 was an increase from both the first quarter of 2019 and the second quarter of 2018, adjusted for inflation.

 

Adjusted for inflation, (constant 2019 dollars) the 2Q 2019 air fare was:

  • Up 2.5% from 2Q 2018 ($355)
  • Up 1.9% from 1Q 2019 ($358)
  • Down 14.4% from 2Q 2014 ($426)

 

The 2Q average fare calculation does not include Frontier Airlines due to data reporting problems. The largest potential impacts would be in cities where Frontier has a substantial market share, such as Denver (12% market share) and Orlando (10% market share).

First Quarter 2019 Air Fare Data

First quarter 2019 average domestic itinerary air fare: $353.

Adjusted for inflation, (constant 2019 dollars) the 1Q 2019 air fare was:

  • Up 0.3% from 1Q 2018 ($352)
  • Down 2.0% from 4Q 2018 ($361)
  • Down 15.5% from 1Q 2015 ($418)

Annual and Fourth-Quarter 2018 Air Fare Data

The 2018 average domestic itinerary air fare of $350 was the lowest inflation-adjusted annual fare since the Bureau of Transportation Statistics began collecting such records in 1995, down 1.8 percent from the previous low of $356 in 2017.

Third-Quarter 2018 Air Fare Data

The third quarter 2018 average domestic itinerary air fare of $343 is the lowest inflation-adjusted quarterly fare since the Bureau of Transportation Statistics began collecting such records in 1995, down 0.4 percent from the previous low of $345 in the third quarter of 2017.

The second quarter 2018 average domestic itinerary air fare of $349 was the lowest second-quarter fare since the Bureau of Transportation Statistics began collecting such records in 1995 and the second lowest of any quarter.
