The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) today released its June 2018 Air Travel Consumer Report (ATCR) on air carrier data compiled for the month of April 2018. Results for All 21 Scheduled U.S. Passenger Airlines:
After-tax net income
- $1.7 billion in 1Q 2018
- down from $5.1 billion in 4Q 2017
- down from $1.9 billion in 1Q 2017
Pre-tax operating profit
- $2.6 billion in 1Q 2018
- down from $4.1 billion in 4Q 2017
- down from $3.3 billion in 1Q 2017
- Total operating revenue: $42.5 billion
- $33.1 billion from fares, 73.7 percent of total first-quarter operating revenue
- $1.1 billion in baggage fees, 2.6 percent of total operating revenue
- $661.9 million from reservation change fees, 1.6 percent of total operating revenue
- Total operating expenses: $39.9 billion
- Fuel costs accounted for $7.4 billion, 18.5 percent of total operating expenses
- Labor costs accounted for $13.5 billion, 33.9 percent of total operating expenses
