BTS Updates National Transportation Statistics 8/31/26

The Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) today released its monthly update to National Transportation Statistics (NTS), a guide to historical national-level transportation trends.

Each month, BTS updates NTS with transportation statistics from across the following areas:

  • The extent, condition, use, and performance of the physical transportation network and infrastructure;
  • Safety information including accidents, crashes, fatalities, and injuries for each transportation mode and for hazardous materials movement;
  • Transportation’s impact on the economy, including gross domestic product, employment by industry and occupation, and transportation-related consumer and Government expenditures; and
  • Transportation’s impact on energy use.

This month, the following tables received new data:

  • Number of Air Carriers, Railroads, Interstate Motor Carriers, Marine Vessel Operators, and Pipeline Operators (1-2)
  • U.S. Flag Vessels by Type and Age (1-34)
  • U.S. Air Carrier Aircraft Departures, Enplaned Revenue Passengers, and Enplaned Revenue Tons (1-37)
  • Average Length of Haul, Domestic Freight and Passenger Modes (1-38, 1-38M)
  • U.S. Ton-Miles of Freight (1-50, 1-50M)
  • Passengers Boarded and Denied Boarding by the Largest U.S. Air Carriers (1-64)
  • Baggage Mishandled by Marketing U.S. Air Carriers (1-65)
  • Flight Operations Arriving On Time by the Largest U.S. Air Carriers (1-66)
  • FAA-Cited Causes of Departure and En Route Delays (1-67)
  • Highway-Rail Grade-Crossing Safety and Property Damage Data (2-5)
  • State Laws on Distracted Driving - Ban on Hand-Held Devices and Texting While Driving (2-25)
  • Fatalities by Highest Driver Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) in Highway Crashes (2-26)
  • Motor Vehicle Fatal Crashes by Day of Week, Time of Day, and Weather and Light Conditions (2-28)
  • Motor Vehicles and Occupants Involved in Fatal Crashes by Posted Speed Limit (2-29)
  • Safety Belt and Motorcycle Helmet Use (2-30)
  • Personal Watercraft Safety Data (2-48)
  • U.S. Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by Major Social Function (billions of current dollars) (3-9)
  • Total Operating Revenues (3-22)
  • Median Weekly Earnings of Full-Time Wage and Salary Workers in Transportation by Detailed Occupation (3-26)
  • Transportation-Related Greenhouse Gas Emissions (4-44)

NTS is a collection of transportation data first published by BTS in November 1971.  NTS has grown to over 200 regularly updated datasets and tables after incorporating materials from other Department of Transportation programs.
